Jared Bednar, the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, recently expressed confusion regarding certain NHL rules. His bewilderment stemmed from a particular incident involving Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn and Avs defenseman Devon Toews during Game 2 of their second-round series.
The Controversial Hit
Early in the second period, Benn delivered a high and forceful hit on Toews behind the Colorado net. The impact of the hit caused Toews’ head to snap back and collide with Dallas forward Wyatt Johnston’s chest. Bednar was taken aback when Benn was not penalized and sent to the penalty box for the hit.
Bednar’s Reaction
Initially, the play was not called a penalty. However, after referees Francis Charron and Frederick L’Ecuyer conferred and categorized it as a major penalty, they decided to review their decision. Ultimately, the major penalty call was overturned following consultation with the replay center. This turn of events did not sit well with Bednar, especially considering his team was trailing 2-0 at that point in the game.
In a post-game interview after Colorado’s 5-3 loss, Bednar shared his frustration, stating, “Does he catch a piece of his shoulder? Yeah, I guess you can argue that. But the target is high. It’s at his head, it makes contact with the head. I’ve seen many times guys get called for the headshot penalty with a lot less than that.”
Bednar pondered the inconsistency in enforcing penalties, expressing uncertainty about his grasp on the NHL rules. Despite his dissatisfaction with the ruling, he acknowledged the physical nature of the game, emphasizing the importance of player safety.
