New York Jets Secure Key Players in Free Agency

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets made significant moves in free agency by signing former New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor, former Baltimore Ravens guard John Simpson, and former San Francisco 49ers defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

Quarterback Addition

The Jets addressed their need for a backup quarterback by bringing in Tyrod Taylor, a seasoned player with experience in the New York market. Taylor, who started five games for the Giants in 2023, brings a level of familiarity and skill to the team, although concerns remain about his durability due to past injuries.

With a career that spans six NFL teams, Taylor has accumulated over 12,000 passing yards, 65 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. Notably, he was part of the Baltimore Ravens’ 2013 Super Bowl-winning team and earned a Pro Bowl selection with the Buffalo Bills in 2015.

Taylor, who turns 35 in August, will sign a two-year contract with the Jets, providing valuable experience and depth to the quarterback position.

Offensive Line Boost

John Simpson, who started every game at left guard for the Ravens in 2023, joins the Jets on a two-year deal worth up to $18 million. Known for his durable playing style, Simpson brings stability to the offensive line alongside center Joe Tippmann and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.

Despite allowing eight sacks in 2023, Simpson ranked well in pass block win rate and adds valuable experience to the Jets’ revamped offensive line. His addition fills the gap left by Laken Tomlinson’s departure and reinforces the team’s commitment to strengthening their weakest unit from the previous season.

Defensive Line Depth

In acquiring Javon Kinlaw, the Jets add a versatile defensive tackle to their roster. Kinlaw, a former first-round pick by the 49ers, showcased his potential in 2023 with solid performances backing up Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead.

Despite injury setbacks early in his career, Kinlaw’s healthy campaign in 2023 saw him contribute 3.5 sacks, 25 tackles, and 12 pressures. His presence adds depth to the defensive line rotation and addresses the departures of key free agents Solomon Thomas, Quinton Jefferson, and Al Woods.

In summary, the New York Jets made calculated moves in free agency to bolster key positions on both offense and defense. With the signings of Tyrod Taylor, John Simpson, and Javon Kinlaw, the team aims to strengthen their roster and build towards a successful campaign in the upcoming NFL season.
