Jürgen Klopp Reflects on Liverpool Tenure
Jürgen Klopp, who spent nine years as the manager of Liverpool, acknowledged that the club could have achieved even greater success during his tenure. Despite winning seven major trophies, including the Premier League and the Champions League, Klopp expressed a sense of missed opportunities.
Unrealized Potential
Under Klopp’s leadership, Liverpool reached the Champions League final in 2018 and 2022 but fell short against Real Madrid on both occasions. In the Premier League, the team narrowly missed out on the title, finishing runners-up to Manchester City by a mere point in two seasons. Klopp admitted that while he wished for more victories, he believed he had given his best.
“We know we could have won more but I can’t change that. We could have won less as well. Not being champion by a point is not a great experience but it’s an experience. I couldn’t have done anything different in these moments,”
Klopp also reflected on Liverpool’s performance in the Champions League, stating, “We could have won more Champions Leagues. Being in three finals is an outstanding achievement. There is a good chance you lose the final, that’s how it is. Real Madrid, they always find a way to win it. We tried again.”
Fond Memories
Despite any regrets, Klopp highlighted the Carabao Cup final victory over Chelsea in February as a standout moment. Describing it as his favorite final, he emphasized the significance of the win and the special bond within the team.
“It was my favorite final we ever played. We know how people see the Carabao but in that moment it felt absolutely outstanding. It showed everything this club is about.”
Klopp praised the unity and spirit of the players, remarking on the emotional connection shared during the game. He recalled the joy of witnessing the team’s success, particularly for players like Virgil van Dijk who secured their first trophy.
Emotional Farewell
As Klopp prepares for his final match against Wolves, he described the past week as the most intense of his life. The farewell process and emotional goodbyes have been bittersweet, with Klopp expressing gratitude for the memories and experiences shared with the club.
“Saying goodbye without feeling sad or hurt, that would mean the time was not good. The time was great. It will be tough.”
Additionally, Liverpool confirmed that Joël Matip and Thiago Alcantara would be departing the club as their contracts expire. Klopp commended both players for their contributions and character, highlighting Matip’s exceptional talent and humility, as well as Thiago’s skill and vision on the pitch.
“Thiago and Joel were in my office this week. Have you ever seen a better free transfer than Joel Matip? Ridiculously funny and a wonderful man. He has to make a decision if he wants to play on. Whoever gets him is a lucky club because he is world class and super humble.”
Reflecting on Thiago’s career, Klopp expressed admiration for the player’s abilities and expressed regret over the impact of injuries on his performance. As Klopp bids farewell to Liverpool, he remains appreciative of the journey and the memories created during his time with the club.
