Haiti’s Current State of Anarchy

Amidst the troubling descent into anarchy in Haiti, it is important to reflect on the previous perceptions of the country held by left-wing celebrities. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that the United States has evacuated its embassy staff, indicating a critical state of affairs. With the government teetering on the verge of collapse and violent gangs seizing control of the city, there are ominous warnings of an impending humanitarian crisis. Reports have even surfaced of incidents of cannibalism taking place.

The gravity of the situation was encapsulated by a report in The New York Times:

“Haiti is currently experiencing an unprecedented uprising, marked by political turmoil that has left Prime Minister Ariel Henry stranded in Puerto Rico, while gangs launch attacks on police stations. This volatile scenario is rapidly evolving into a humanitarian catastrophe, as the food supply faces threats, and access to essential resources such as water and healthcare is severely constrained.”

The Humanitarian Crisis in Haiti

As gangs consolidate their power, engaging in coordinated assaults against the state, millions of Haitians find themselves caught in the crossfire. Fearful of venturing outside due to the escalating violence, they grapple with scarcity of basic necessities including food, clean water, and fuel. Desperation pervades the populace as the specter of widespread chaos looms, reminiscent of past tumultuous periods in the nation’s history.

Recalling events from five years ago, when President Trump reportedly disparaged Haiti as a “shithole country,” a resurgence of commentary on the nation’s fortunes has emerged. In response to the derogatory remarks, several left-leaning celebrities such as Bill Maher, Susan Sarandon, and Conan O’Brien displayed solidarity by sporting caps bearing the slogan “Haiti is Great Already.”

O’Brien, in a notable display of support, journeyed to Haiti for his show, albeit likely under heavy security arrangements while lodging in the country’s most exclusive accommodations.

Although disputed by Trump, the sentiments expressed in his alleged comments seem to eerily resonate with the current state of affairs in Haiti.
