The MacArthur Foundation: A Sponsor with Multiple Faces
Regular viewers of PBS are likely familiar with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, a prominent sponsor often mentioned on the network. However, the foundation’s influence extends far beyond public television. While supporting various media outlets and journalism schools, the MacArthur Foundation is also a significant financial backer of the abortion industry.
This financial partnership between the media and abortion philanthropists is shaping the way critical issues such as the sanctity of life are portrayed to the general public. Organizations like Live Action have delved into the foundation’s contributions to what is often referred to as Big Abortion. Some of the notable recipients of the MacArthur Foundation’s funding include:
The Center for Reproductive Rights
OpenDemocracy
-
In 2007, the MacArthur Foundation granted $40,000 to OpenDemocracy, a left-leaning group that has been vocal in advocating for women’s reproductive rights, including supporting the abortion pill as a pivotal advancement. However, OpenDemocracy has also published articles attacking practices like Abortion Pill Reversal (APR), labeling them as “dangerous” or “unproven.”
Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the United States, has received substantial funding from the MacArthur Foundation over the years. Total contributions amount to over $2.8 million, distributed to various branches of the organization.
- Planned Parenthood of Illinois: $90,000 (1991-2017)
- International Planned Parenthood Federation: $2,220,000 (2002-2012)
- Planned Parenthood Federation of America: $450,000 (1985)
- Planned Parenthood of the Palm Beach Area: $50,000 (1987)
The Population Council
One of the most significant recipients of the MacArthur Foundation’s generosity is the Population Council, an organization with a history rooted in eugenics. The foundation has granted more than $19 million to the Population Council since 1989. Founded by John D. Rockefeller III, the Population Council played a key role in introducing the abortion pill to the United States.
Through its subsidiary Danco Laboratories, LLC, the Population Council commercialized the abortion pill and set up a system to receive royalties from its sales. Today, the Population Council receives funding from various sources, including the Gates, Buffett, and Packard Foundations, among others.
