Meta’s AI Assistant Rises to Compete with ChatGPT

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, announced on Thursday that it will be rolling out its advanced AI assistant across all its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. This newest addition, dubbed “Meta AI,” has been hailed as the most intelligent AI assistant available for free. Users can now experience its capabilities in platform feeds, chats, and search functions. Notably, Meta AI is equipped with the ability to swiftly generate high-quality images, adapting instantaneously with every few keystrokes entered by users.

Meta AI’s Expansion and Capabilities

Initially unveiled back in September, Meta AI has now been made accessible in English to over a dozen countries beyond the U.S., such as Australia, Nigeria, and Singapore. Furthermore, Meta has made Meta AI available as a standalone website, broadening its reach to a wider audience. This AI assistant was constructed using Meta’s latest generative AI model, Llama 3, which introduces two variants: Llama 3 8B with 8 billion parameters and Llama 3 70B with 70 billion parameters. This advancement signifies a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor, Llama 2.

Meta has emphasized that Llama 3’s performance has achieved top-tier results across various industry benchmarks, outshining competitors such as Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude 3. The company proudly claims that Llama 3 stands as the premier open-source model within its class.

Future Prospects for Llama 3 Models

Despite the remarkable capabilities of the current Llama 3 models, Meta is already looking ahead to the future. Plans are in place to further enhance the Llama 3 family by developing models with over 400 billion parameters. Meta aims to launch a series of models in the upcoming months that will introduce new features, including multimodality, allowing the AI to comprehend and generate various types of content, including images and videos.

To support these ambitious AI initiatives, Meta has heavily invested in the development of custom chips, forging close ties with industry leaders like Nvidia. In a recent tech conference, Tom Alison, Head of Facebook, highlighted Meta’s ongoing efforts in AI development, emphasizing the creation of a cutting-edge model set to drive recommendations across its platforms as part of its technological roadmap extending into 2026.
