Recent Developments in Do Kwon’s Extradition Case
Amidst ongoing legal challenges, Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon faced another twist in his extradition saga as an appellate court in Montenegro annulled a prior decision for his extradition. The court cited “significant violations of criminal procedure provisions” due to unclear reasoning in the previous ruling. This decision, outlined in a translated press release, effectively returns the case for retrial.
A Legal Battle Unfolds
The saga dates back to Terra’s collapse in May 2022, culminating in substantial losses for investors. Subsequently, both South Korea and the United States sought Kwon’s extradition, complicating matters for the Montenegro courts. Kwon’s arrest in March 2023, on charges related to falsified travel documents, added another layer of complexity to the case.
Despite legal challenges and appeals, Kwon and his associate Chang-joon Han found themselves embroiled in a legal battle. The duo was apprehended at an airport in Montenegro attempting to fly to Dubai with counterfeit Costa Rican passports. While they maintained their ignorance of the fake passports, both were convicted and sentenced to four months in a Montenegrin prison.
In a separate development, Han was successfully extradited to South Korea in February to face charges tied to Terraform Labs’ scandal. The Ministry of Justice highlighted Han’s involvement in various fraudulent activities within the financial investment sector. Consequences for his actions could potentially entail a lifelong prison sentence if found guilty.
