NASA Opens Applications for Next Class of Astronauts

NASA is currently seeking individuals to join its upcoming class of astronauts as the agency intensifies its efforts to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon. While the application process is open to the public until April 16, the stringent requirements indicate that only a select few with specialized expertise in flight or science will be considered. This criteria ensures that individuals seeking to purchase their way into the Artemis program cannot do so.

Stringent Requirements for Prospective Astronauts

The prerequisites outlined by NASA may appear straightforward, but they necessitate years of dedication to fulfill. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, either natural born or naturalized. Additionally, candidates must possess a master’s degree in a relevant STEM field such as engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. A minimum of three years of experience in one of these fields is required for consideration. Medical doctors are also eligible to apply after completing three years of residency.

Individuals like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and myself do not meet these stringent criteria as they lack the necessary qualifications and experiences.

Alternative Pathways to Becoming an Astronaut

For those without a STEM master’s degree, other avenues for acceptance exist for individuals with sufficient flight experience. Pilots aiming to become astronauts must hold a certification as Test Pilots and must have accumulated 1,000 hours in command of an aircraft, with 850 of those hours involving high-performance jet aircraft. It comes as no surprise that military pilots are well-represented in the NASA Astronaut Corps.

Application Process and Training Requirements

Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications online, with a reminder that the role of an astronaut is not a remote position. Extensive travel will be a fundamental aspect of the job. Additionally, aspiring astronauts must complete NASA’s long-duration flight astronaut physical examination, undergo a comprehensive background investigation, and pass a drug test. Training for extended missions, including stays on the International Space Station, can span up to three years.

Challenges and Rewards of Astronaut Life

Individuals selected as NASA astronauts can anticipate an annual salary of $152,258. This compensation may seem modest given the responsibilities and potential risks involved, but the unique opportunity to journey to the Moon is a rare privilege that few can boast of.
