Tales of the Empire: Expanding the Star Wars Universe
As “The Bad Batch” wraps up its three-season journey, the Star Wars galaxy prepares for a new chapter filled with intrigue and darkness. Fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of “The Acolyte” on June 4, but before that, they are treated to another captivating TV series in the form of Tales of the Empire, a collection of animated shorts.
In late 2022, Lucasfilm and Disney Plus introduced “Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi,” a mini-series comprising six animated shorts that delved deeper into the histories of beloved characters such as Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. With Tales of the Empire, viewers can expect a closer look at Morgan Elsbeth, a witch aligned with Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the continuation of Barriss Offee’s tumultuous journey post her departure from the Jedi Order.
The release date for “Tales of the Empire’s” six shorts is set for May 4, perfectly timed to coincide with the annual Star Wars celebration and just one month prior to the unveiling of “The Acolyte,” which takes place during the High Republic era, preceding the events of the prequel trilogy.
The newly released trailer hints at a narrative that extends beyond the Reign of the Empire, offering insights into Morgan Elsbeth’s origins on Dathomir and her storyline post the Galactic Empire’s downfall, bridging the gap between her appearances in “The Mandalorian” Season 2 and “Ahsoka” Season 1.
For Barriss Offee, whose departure from the Clone Wars was marked by betrayal and tragedy involving her former comrade Ahsoka Tano, her path appears to lead to the Inquisitorius—an Imperial organization dedicated to hunting down Jedi remnants under the watchful eye of Darth Vader. It is unlikely that her journey concludes on a positive note akin to Morgan Elsbeth’s fate.
The Visual Spectacle of Tales of the Empire
Accompanying the riveting trailer is a visually striking poster that highlights the series’ focus on the darker aspects of the Star Wars universe, featuring familiar antagonists that fans have come to know and love.
Excitement for the expanding Star Wars universe is palpable, with “Tales of the Empire,” “The Acolyte,” and the upcoming open-world game “Star Wars Outlaws” from Ubisoft Massive, set to be released this summer. Additionally, fans can look forward to a new cinematic experience in the form of “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” scheduled to hit theaters by summer 2026.
