NHL Franchise Heading to Salt Lake City

In a momentous event, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and new Utah NHL owners Ryan and Ashley Smith addressed the public on Friday regarding the unveiling of the franchise heading to Salt Lake City. This announcement follows the recent news that Utah will take over the hockey operations of the Arizona Coyotes, marking the end of the Coyotes franchise and the beginning of a new era in the Beehive State.

One of the major factors that led to the Coyotes’ transition to inactivity was the issue of the team’s arena. For the past two seasons, the Coyotes had been playing out of the 4,600-capacity Mullett Arena, which was clearly not suitable for the team’s needs. As a result, the new franchise will have a five-year window to establish a more fitting venue for their games in Arizona.

Addressing Venue Concerns

During the press conference, the topic of the franchise’s new home was of primary importance. Ryan Smith fielded questions about the plans for the team’s venue and shared insights into the decision-making process. Originally considering the construction of a new arena, Smith altered his approach after a thorough evaluation and opted to kick off the team’s tenure at the Delta Center, which currently serves as the home of the NBA’s Utah Jazz.

To ensure that the arena is capable of accommodating hockey games, the Smiths explored ways to optimize the fan experience and facilitate smooth transitions between ice hockey and basketball events. “We’ve worked on a plan that will provide seating for about 17,000 to 17,500 inside this arena without compromising the fantastic basketball experience,” Ryan Smith explained. The utilization of cutting-edge technology will enable seamless adjustments between hockey and basketball setups, promising an enhanced arena experience for fans.

No Arena Drama

Bettman echoed Smith’s sentiments and expressed relief at the clarity surrounding the team’s venue proposals. The plans laid out by Smith and his team will incrementally expand the Delta Center’s capacity to accommodate a larger audience in the coming years. The assurance of a drama-free arena transition was a welcome relief for Bettman, who emphasized the importance of a smooth operational shift to maintain the momentum of the new franchise’s launch.

League’s Excitement for Utah

In his opening address, Bettman conveyed the NHL’s enthusiasm for establishing a presence in Utah and expressed gratitude towards the new ownership for expediting the deal to bring the team to Salt Lake City. The commissioner highlighted the extraordinary nature of the Smiths’ efforts in swiftly setting up a new franchise under challenging circumstances. He expressed gratitude for the positive impact the new team would have on the league and the game of hockey as a whole, emphasizing the strengthening of the NHL through this strategic move.

Ryan Smith, in turn, shared his optimism for the future of the franchise, citing the burgeoning interest in hockey within the city and state. With hopes to generate high demand for tickets and maintain a loyal fan base, Smith conveyed his commitment to ensuring a vibrant and engaging inaugural season for the team in Utah.
