Moments in San Francisco

Last weekend I embarked on a journey to San Francisco, preparing for an immersive experience centered around all things Nvidia and AI. Despite the anticipated intensity of the company’s annual GTC conference, I refused to succumb to jet lag. Instead, I embarked on a two-day excursion to Monterey, reconnecting with nature through encounters with sea lions and otters, providing a rejuvenating respite before delving into the realms of artificial intelligence, GPUs, and PFLOPS.

Highlights of Nvidia’s GTC Conference

Nvidia’s GTC conference proved to be a whirlwind of activity. The event commenced with CEO Jensen Huang delivering a lengthy keynote address within the packed SAP Center in San Jose. Huang donned a distinctive black leather jacket that exuded a slightly more ‘rock and roll’ vibe compared to his previous attire, reflecting Nvidia’s remarkable stock performance that evoked a celebratory atmosphere. Noteworthy moments included the convergence of the authors of ‘Attention is All You Need,’ which catalyzed the generative AI revolution with the introduction of Transformers. Attendees engaged in numerous sessions, panels, fireside chats, dinners, and happy hours, all while being inundated with a stream of Nvidia news, culminating in the revelation of the latest next-generation AI chip and platform, Blackwell.

Continual Evolution of the AI Industry

Subsequent to the conference, the relentless pace of AI industry developments persisted. Notable occurrences included Microsoft’s strategic acquisition of Inflection AI CEO and co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead its consumer AI division, formerly known for his role as co-founder of DeepMind. Furthermore, reports surfaced of discussions between Apple and Google regarding a partnership to integrate Google AI into iPhones. The unveiling of the first ‘fairly trained’ AI model garnered attention, alongside the United Nations’ adoption of the inaugural global AI resolution.

Personal Reflections

As the perpetual nature of the AI domain unfolds, I bid farewell to my tenure at VentureBeat to pursue a fresh professional endeavor. However, my dedication to AI coverage endures, a realm that I have both relished and esteemed over the preceding two years. While bidding adieu to my esteemed colleagues and the extraordinary team at VentureBeat evokes mixed emotions, I fondly reminisce about the remarkable opportunity to delve into the AI beat six months before the emergence of ChatGPT and generative AI surged into the public consciousness. Collectively, my articles have chronicled the narratives of the visionaries and enterprises shaping generative AI’s ascent, evolution, opportunities, and challenges.

A New Chapter

Previous encounters with AI focused on overarching concepts, illuminating the utilization of traditional AI for predictive analytics and pattern recognition within specific business contexts. Transitioning to VentureBeat heralded a transformative encounter with the dynamic realm of AI. Surrounded by industry luminaries, I navigated the evolving AI landscape, cultivating my understanding and reporting acumen amidst the fervor surrounding generative AI.
