Eric Adams Cancels Border Trip Citing Safety Concerns

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has chosen to cancel his planned trip to the southern border due to safety concerns. The decision comes as the city grapples with the strain of accommodating tens of thousands of illegal immigrants seeking assistance.

Adams had received an invitation from Sister Norma Pimentel, the executive director of the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, to visit San Juan. However, a spokesperson for the mayor confirmed the cancellation in a statement issued on Saturday.

“As Lent draws to a close, our team was excited to stand with faith and humanitarian leaders who have dedicated their lives to serving the most needy among us. We were eager to discuss our work in New York City and explore new ways to collaborate with leaders in cities across the country. Due to safety concerns at one of the cities we were going to visit in Mexico, flagged by the U.S. Department of State, we have decided to pause this visit at this time.”

This visit would have marked Adams’s second trip to the border. In a previous visit to the Mexican city of Puebla last October, the mayor delivered mixed messages, stating “Mi casa es su casa” while also highlighting New York’s inability to accommodate more migrants.

“We are neighbors. We are familia. Mi casa es su casa. Your struggles are my struggles,” Adams expressed. “There is no more room in New York. Our hearts are endless, but our resources are not. We don’t want to put people in congregate shelters. We don’t want people to think they will be employed.”

Despite his ongoing grievances about the influx of individuals arriving in New York, Adams has yet to call on President Joe Biden to secure the border and halt the migrant influx. Instead, he has been advocating for other parts of the country to share the burden.

As per reports, over 10 million migrants have illegally entered the U.S. since Biden took office in 2021. This surpasses the population of 36 states. With thousands arriving daily, the number continues to rise, possibly being an underestimate.

Due to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s refusal to fund Biden’s open border policies, many migrants are sent to “sanctuary cities” like New York, Chicago, and Denver, where their food, accommodation, and healthcare costs are covered by local taxpayers.
