Political Shift Expected in Portugal’s 2024 National Elections

As 2024 unfolds, many anticipate significant gains for right-wing parties across Europe. Portugal is no exception, with the upcoming national elections poised to potentially bring about a seismic political change. The populist party known as Chega, meaning ‘Enough,’ is on track to double its vote count and solidify its position as the country’s third largest political force.

Chega’s Common-Sense Approach

Chega has gained attention for its practical stance on immigration and economic issues, although critics often label it as ‘controversial’ and ‘far-right.’ For years, Portugal has been under the rule of center-left and center-right parties marred by corruption scandals and economic struggles. With recent upheavals, Chega has emerged as a pivotal player in reshaping the country’s political landscape.

Economist Agnese Ortolani pointed out to the UK’s Express that “The far-right populist Chega (Enough), the third-largest party, looks set to make the biggest gains at the election.” The traditional ruling parties, the center-left Socialist Party and center-right Social Democratic Party, have faced allegations of corruption, leading to a potential power shift.

Political Dynamics and Potential Alliances

The impending snap election was triggered by the resignation of the Socialist Prime Minister António Costa, amidst a corruption probe. A right-wing coalition involving Chega may offer the only viable path for the center-right PSD party to govern effectively. Despite initial reluctance from PSD’s leader Luís Montenegro to form a post-election pact with Chega, polls indicate such collaboration might be essential for governance.

Chega, under the leadership of André Ventura, positions itself as a crusader against corruption, advocating for stricter immigration policies and economic reforms. Ortolani highlighted that “Chega combines economic populism with stringent security and immigration measures. Its potential inclusion in or support for a right-wing coalition would push policies further to the conservative side.”

Chega’s Rise and Potential Impact

According to a report by the Telegraph, André Ventura, a former priest trainee and football commentator, is poised for a remarkable outcome in Portugal’s elections. Polls suggest Chega could secure at least 15% of the vote, doubling its previous performance and securing a prominent third-place spot.

Despite reservations from major parties about cooperating with Chega due to perceived extremism, Ventura’s rapid ascendance indicates he could hold significant sway in shaping the new parliament’s direction.
