The Premier Women’s Hockey League Awards

As the Premier Women’s Hockey League’s (PWHL) inaugural regular season nears its end, the league has announced the introduction of 10 unique awards to celebrate outstanding achievements both on and off the ice. These awards will be presented annually, recognizing exceptional performances throughout the season.

Billie Jean King MVP Award

The Billie Jean King MVP Award will be the most prestigious accolade of the season, honoring the player deemed most valuable to their team’s success during the regular season.

Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP Award

For the post-season, the PWHL will present the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP Award to the player who has made the most significant impact on their team’s success throughout the playoffs.

In a recent statement, Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations, emphasized the significance of these awards, stating, “To have these awards named in their honor advances the sports legacy of these pioneers, who have devoted themselves to women’s equal rights in sports.”

Additional Awards

Aside from the MVP awards, the league will also recognize standout performers in various categories:

  • Forward of the Year: Given to the forward who demonstrates exceptional skill throughout the regular season.
  • Defender of the Year: Awarded to the defender who excels at their position during the regular season.
  • Goaltender of the Year: Presented to the goaltender who demonstrates outstanding ability throughout the regular season.
  • Rookie of the Year: Awarded to the top newcomer in their first season of professional play.
  • Coach of the Year: Recognizing the head coach who has had the biggest impact on their team’s success.
  • Community Leadership Award: Celebrating a player who goes above and beyond to make a positive impact in the community.
  • Points Leader: Acknowledging the player with the most points scored in the regular season.
  • Top Goal Scorer: Recognizing the player with the most goals scored during the regular season.

These awards aim to highlight the exceptional talent and contributions within the PWHL, showcasing the dedication and skill of the league’s players and coaches.
