Rabbit CEO Jesse Lyu Defends Rabbit R1 AI Device

Rabbit CEO Jesse Lyu recently defended the Rabbit R1 AI device amidst claims that it may simply be a ChatGPT wrapper and not a standalone innovation. Lyu emphasized that the Rabbit R1 is not just an Android app, asserting its unique capabilities and functionalities.

Push-to-Talk Feature Outage

However, the Rabbit R1 faced a setback when its push-to-talk feature experienced a brief outage, coinciding with an OpenAI API outage. This issue was first observed by The Verge, highlighting a potential connection between the Rabbit R1’s functionality and OpenAI’s systems.

A customer support account in Rabbit’s Discord channel acknowledged the problem with the push-to-talk queries not responding and assured users that the team was diligently working to resolve the issue. Despite this glitch, the vision mode remained operational during the outage period.

OpenAI promptly addressed the API outage on its status page, citing elevated error rates on fine-tuning API models and reserved capacity. Following swift resolution on OpenAI’s end, Rabbit updated customers that the push-to-talk feature should be fully functional again.

Dependency on OpenAI and ChatGPT

While Rabbit relies on OpenAI’s ChatGPT to interpret user commands and intentions, it supplements this with its proprietary large action model (LAM) to execute tasks such as playing music or ordering food. However, instances of malfunctioning were reported, including inaccuracies in location tracking and failed song playback.

During a demo event, Jesse Lyu himself encountered challenges while ordering food through the Rabbit R1, showcasing the device’s limitations in real-world scenarios. Despite efforts to attribute issues to external interfaces, such as DoorDash, the R1’s performance raised concerns about its operational efficiency.

Rabbit’s reliance on other AI models for core functions coupled with past OpenAI API outages raises questions about the device’s sustainability and reliability. As Rabbit navigates through potential challenges and improvements, addressing fundamental operational issues will be crucial for establishing its credibility and user trust.
