Rafael Nadal to Play in Madrid Open Despite Not Being Fully Fit

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has announced that he will participate in the Madrid Open, even though he is not in optimal physical condition. Despite his current state, Nadal expressed uncertainty about his readiness for the upcoming French Open later this month.

Lingering Concerns and Future Outlook

Nadal revealed on Wednesday that if he feels the same way upon arriving in Paris as he does before his debut in Madrid, he would opt out of competing at Roland Garros. He acknowledged that his physical sensations leading up to the Madrid tournament have been less than ideal.

“The sensations haven’t been perfect this week. If it wasn’t Madrid, maybe I wouldn’t play. But there are a lot of emotions involved. I don’t know what’s going to happen in the following three weeks.”

Despite the uncertainties, Nadal remains determined and committed to continue fighting for his chances to compete at the French Open. He emphasized the importance of doing what is necessary to prepare for the tournament, although he indicated that his current condition would inhibit his ability to perform at his best.

Hope for Competitiveness and Farewell Tour

The 37-year-old tennis legend, who is contemplating retirement after this season, is aiming to make a final memorable appearance at Roland Garros, where he has achieved remarkable success with 14 championships. Nadal, a five-time winner of the Madrid Open, expressed optimism and hope that he will be able to play without significant limitations during the tournament.

  • Nadal said, “Hopefully I can play without many limitations. Then we’ll see what happens. If I play without limitations, even if I lose, then it will be positive.”

Following his hip surgery last summer, Nadal faced a setback in Barcelona, where he suffered an early exit in his first competition in over three months. Despite the challenges, Nadal remains devoted to enjoying his time on the court and appreciating the support he receives from fans at home in Madrid.

“The goal is to be on court. Enjoy as long as possible. Try to finish the tournament alive in terms of body issues and enjoy the fact that I will be able to compete one more time in the professional tour and here at home in Madrid.”

Accepting the Present Situation and Looking Ahead

Nadal acknowledged his current physical limitations but maintains a hopeful outlook for the future. He emphasized the importance of accepting the reality of his circumstances while remaining optimistic about finding improvements in his physical well-being moving forward.

“I don’t lose hope. I just accept the situation that I have today. I mean, I am not playing bad. It’s about more body limitations.”

The tennis maestro acknowledged that his current physical condition hampers his ability to compete at his desired level, but he remains determined to give his best effort in the tournaments ahead.
