Real Madrid Files Complaint Over Alleged Racist Chants

Real Madrid lodged a complaint on Friday with Spanish hate crime prosecutors regarding the purported “racist and hate insults” directed at the team’s forward, Vinícius Júnior, by sections of Atlético Madrid and Barcelona supporters.

Racist chants were audible as fans entered Atleti’s Metropolitano Stadium prior to the Champions League match against Inter Milan. Similar chanting was also heard before the Copa del Rey round-of-16 clash in January, which Atlético emerged victorious with a 4-2 scoreline.

Real Madrid released a statement, stating, “Real Madrid condemns these violent attacks of racism, discrimination, and hatred that have been occurring, unfortunately repeatedly, against our player Vinícius Júnior.”

Call for Investigation and Action

The club urged the Prosecutor’s Office to request recordings from both venues to identify the perpetrators of the racist and hate insults. Real Madrid emphasized its commitment to defending the values of football and sport, advocating for zero tolerance towards such appalling incidents.

LaLiga announced plans to report the chants to the specialized prosecutors’ office for hate and discrimination crimes, despite not being affiliated directly since the incident took place outside the stadium premises. UEFA holds the authority to intervene if the incidents transpired within the stadium complex and are reported.

Player and Public Outcry

Vinícius Júnior himself called upon UEFA to take action against the alleged hate crimes, expressing his disappointment at such incidents even in games where he is not personally involved. His plea resonated with Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who condemned the racist behavior and extended solidarity towards the player.

Real Madrid’s coach, Carlo Ancelotti, commended the club for addressing the issue, emphasizing the need for zero tolerance towards such behavior. He stressed the importance of collective action to deter such problems and safeguard societal values.

In conclusion, the unwavering stance of Real Madrid against racism and discrimination underscores the essential role of football clubs in advocating equality, respect, and unity within the sporting community.
