The Maven Cargo E-bike Review

As a non-bike enthusiast who prefers running for exercise, I took on the task of reviewing the Maven Cargo E-bike by Integral Electrics. This cargo bike is specifically designed for smaller riders, especially women, who aim to replace their family’s second car with a versatile e-bike that can cater to family needs like transporting children, running errands, and commuting short distances. Integral Electrics’ CEO and co-founder Laura Belmar shared in an interview that she created the Maven to address the struggles that many smaller riders face when using traditional bikes unable to support cargo haulage efficiently.

The Idea Behind the Maven

Upon realizing the limitations faced by herself and other families in similar situations, Laura Belmar set out to design a cargo bike that would serve as a family station wagon on two wheels. The Maven Cargo E-bike aims to be user-friendly and controllable by smaller riders, while still accommodating taller cyclists with a size range of 5 feet, 0 inches to 6-foot-7. The bike prioritizes comfort, safety, and affordability, mirroring ideal family-car traits.

My Experience with the Maven

At 5-foot-4 with a 5-year-old child, a taller husband, occasional errands to run, and a desire to eliminate a second car, I am the prime candidate to test the Maven Cargo E-bike. Equipped with insights from cycling experts on the Ars Technica team, this review aims to present a balanced perspective that caters to families seeking an alternative to a second car, especially those new to cargo e-bikes.

General Impressions:

The Maven excels in its goal to provide a cargo e-bike that feels manageable for smaller riders carrying precious cargo. Although weighing 85 pounds, the bike’s low center of gravity and stable tires ensure an easy and controlled ride. The two batteries are positioned low on the bike, with 20-inch wheels allowing the rear rack to sit just 24 inches above the ground. The 3-inch-wide tires provide extra stability, enhancing the overall riding experience.

The Maven’s design features are not exclusive to this model alone, as other cargo e-bikes on the market also sport 20-inch tires. However, the Maven distinguishes itself through other key elements that may appeal to different rider preferences.

During my test rides with groceries and my child on the back, the Maven delivered a smooth and enjoyable ride. The optional rear railing/handlebar and seat pad enhanced my child’s experience, making him eager and excited to ride along. The 750-watt motor provided effortless assistance while going uphill or accelerating, and the adjustable front suspension offered a comfortable cushion over various terrains.

The Maven

Despite my child’s playful movements on the bike, simulating adventurous scenes from his favorite movie, I never felt unstable or at risk of losing control. The Maven successfully combines functionality with fun, providing a reliable alternative to traditional family transportation options.
