Owning a Soccer Club: The Financial Impact on Ryan Reynolds

Acquiring a soccer club has proven to be a significant financial endeavor for Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds. The Welsh team, Wrexham, purchased by Reynolds and fellow Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney in 2021, recently released its financial accounts for the latest year. The figures reveal a notable increase in the amount owed to the celebrity owners, reaching nearly 9 million pounds ($11.4 million).

Financial Performance Overview

The financial report disclosed that the club’s debts surged from 3.7 million pounds ($4.67 million) in the previous year to the current amount by the end of June 2022. Despite a positive uptick in turnover from nearly 6 million pounds ($7.5 million) to 10.5 million pounds ($13.3 million), Wrexham faced mounting losses, escalating from 2.9 million pounds ($3.66 million) to 5.1 million pounds ($6.4 million).

Acquisition and Progress

Reynolds and McElhenney acquired Wrexham, a longstanding soccer institution, for $2.5 million when the club resided in the fifth tier of English football. Since then, Wrexham has achieved promotion to the English Football League and is now in contention for consecutive promotions, potentially advancing to League One, the third tier of English football.

League Standing and Future Prospects

Currently standing at third place in League Two, Wrexham is preparing for a crucial match against table-toppers Mansfield. The club’s positioning is promising, with a three-point lead over fourth-placed MK Dons and a game in hand. The top three teams in the division secure automatic promotion, while the next four enter a playoff for one additional promotion spot.

Strategic Investments and Sustainability

Wrexham justified its increased losses as necessary to unlock the club’s full potential expeditiously. The club emphasized that it faces no immediate pressure to repay these loans at the expense of hindering progress. Additional financial support will be sought to fund upcoming capital projects, such as expanding the capacity of the Racecourse Ground stadium, a move driven by the swelling attendance figures since the ownership change.

Financial Outlook and Revenue Growth

Despite the financial setbacks, Wrexham remains optimistic about its future. The popularity of the documentary “Welcome to Wrexham,” documenting the journey of Reynolds and McElhenney as club owners, coupled with increased revenue from the EFL matches, positions the club for continued growth. The club is confident that its income streams are now robust enough to cover operational costs and prevent a recurrence of substantial financial losses.
