Transgenderism in the Military: An Examination of ICD-10 Diagnosis Codes
Recent data from the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database (DMED) has revealed a significant and exponential rise in the number of occurrences related to transgenderism in active-duty military personnel. These occurrences are classified and recorded using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes.
According to Lt. Ted Macie, an active-duty Navy Medical Service Corps officer, all branches of the military have seen an increase in occurrences listed as “transsexualism,” with the Army and Air Force showing the most prominent rise between 2016 and 2022. The data indicates a major spike in occurrences in recent years, signifying a concerning trend.
Implications and Concerns
Lt. Gen. (ret.) Rod Bishop, chairman of Stand Together Against Racism and Radicalism in the Services (STARRS), provided insight into the rising number of occurrences in the military. STARRS is an organization advocating against Critical Race Theory (CRT) and woke ideology in the military and service academies.
Bishop emphasized that the issue of transgenderism in the military is not simply a matter of tolerance but has broader implications for military readiness and cohesion. He expressed concerns about the disruption of traditional norms and the impact on unity and cohesiveness within military units.
According to Bishop, the push for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) ideology in the military, without proper consideration of its implications, has contributed to the challenges surrounding transgenderism. He highlighted the divisive nature of forcing individuals with moral or religious objections to room or shower with transgender individuals, which can lead to significant disruptions.
Survey Findings
An author-conducted survey revealed that a significant portion of military personnel have served with transgender individuals and have moral or religious objections to transgenderism. The survey participants also expressed concerns about the impact of DEI training on combat readiness and the feeling of being compelled to adhere to beliefs contrary to their own convictions.
These findings underscore the complexity and challenges associated with addressing transgenderism within the military and the importance of considering the broader implications on readiness, cohesion, and individual beliefs.
