Rivian’s Latest Model Lineup Unveiled by RJ Scaringe in California

During a recent event in California, Rivian’s CEO and founder, RJ Scaringe, announced the addition of new models to the electric vehicle startup’s lineup. The highlight of the event was the introduction of the R2, a smaller electric vehicle with a starting price of $45,000. The R2, set to be released in 2026, shares several design elements with the larger R1S SUV but is shorter in both length and height and features two rows of seating instead of three.

The R2 boasts several convenience improvements, including additional storage options such as gloveboxes and a flashlight stored in the door. Furthermore, the vehicle’s rear window can be lowered to provide access to the cargo area, and both rows of seats can be folded flat to accommodate camping needs. Three different powertrain configurations will be available for the R2, including rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and a tri-motor option, all capable of achieving at least 300 miles of range. The tri-motor version can accelerate from 0-60 mph in under three seconds.

The R2’s battery pack utilizes larger-format cylindrical cells and will be manufactured at Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois. Reservations for the R2 have already opened with a $100 deposit, and deliveries are expected to commence in the first half of 2026.

Smaller Electric Crossovers R3 and R3X Also Introduced

In a surprise reveal at the event, Scaringe unveiled two additional models, the R3 and R3X, compact electric crossovers that share a new midsize platform with the R2. These models feature Rivian’s signature lighting design but have a distinct shape reminiscent of smaller vehicles like the Fiat Panda or Lada Niva. The R3 and R3X offer similar powertrain options and range to the R2, along with practical features such as folding seats and a front cargo frunk.

Production of the R3 and R3X will take place at Rivian’s new factory in Georgia, although specific details regarding delivery dates and pricing have not been disclosed yet.

Focus on Fast Charging and Accessibility

All three models, including the R2, R3, and R3X, are expected to support DC fast-charging, allowing for a quick charge from 10-80 percent in under 30 minutes. Rivian has confirmed that the vehicles will feature native J3400 charging ports. Existing Rivian owners will soon have access to the Tesla Supercharger network, although they will need to utilize a CCS1-J3400 adapter.

“I have never been more excited to launch new products—R2 and R3 are distinctly Rivian in terms of performance, capability, and usability yet with pricing that makes them accessible to a lot of people. Our design and engineering teams are extremely focused on driving innovation into not only the product features but also our approach to manufacturing to achieve dramatically lower costs,” said Scaringe. “R2 provides buyers starting in the $45,000 price range with a much-needed choice with a thoroughly developed technology platform that is bursting with personality. I can’t wait to get these to customers.”
