Robbie Avila Transfers to Saint Louis

Robbie Avila, a former standout player at Indiana State University, has decided to continue his collegiate basketball career at Saint Louis University. Making the announcement on a podcast, Avila expressed his excitement about reuniting with coach Josh Schertz, whom he had previously played under at Indiana State.

Standing at 6-foot-10, Avila hails from Oak Forest, Illinois. During the 2023-24 season, he emerged as a key player for Indiana State, leading the team to an impressive 32-win season. Known for his distinctive playing style and trademark goggles, Avila became a fan favorite and earned various nicknames like “Cream Abdul-Jabbar,” “Larry Nerd,” and “Steph Blurry.”

Avila’s on-court performance was equally impressive, putting up solid numbers with an average of 17.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. His shooting prowess, especially from beyond the arc, was a critical factor in Indiana State’s offensive efficiency. The team ranked highly in key statistical categories, including effective field goal percentage, 2-point percentage, and 3-point percentage.

Although Indiana State fell short of an NCAA tournament bid, they made a strong showing in the NIT, eventually reaching the championship game before falling to Seton Hall. Following the season, Coach Schertz’s move to Saint Louis prompted Avila and several other starters to explore transfer options.

While Avila chose to follow his coach to Saint Louis, his former teammates pursued opportunities at other universities. Ryan Conwell committed to Xavier, while Julian Larry and Jayson Kent are set to join Texas.

Avila’s decision to transfer to Saint Louis reflects his trust in Coach Schertz’s coaching philosophy and vision for his future. As he looks ahead to the next chapter of his collegiate career, Avila is eager to contribute to Saint Louis’s basketball program and strive for further success on the court.
