Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Users Complaining About the Smelly S-Pen

Designing electronic devices involves a plethora of decisions related to physical appearance and material selection, often aiming to create a premium-quality product that aligns with mass production requirements. Brands consider elements like cost, texture, and durability to craft the ideal user experience. Surprisingly, one factor that is often overlooked in material selection is smell.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra users have recently discovered an unusual characteristic of their devices’ “S-Pen” stylus— it smells bad. A Reddit post by user “LatifYil” titled “Why does my s pen smell so bad?” has garnered nearly 250 comments from users sharing similar experiences with the unpleasant odor emanating from the stylus. The prevailing sentiment among users is that the S-Pen emits a foul smell, with some likening it to the scent of an electrical fire.

Descriptions of the smell provided by users suggest that the stylus carries a burnt plastic aroma, resembling that of overheated electronic components. The consensus is that the rubber tip of the S- Pen is the source of the unpleasant odor, overpowering the overall user experience.

Speculation regarding the cause of the smell ranges from the addition of bitterants to prevent accidental ingestion, a practice observed in Nintendo Switch cartridges, to the internal heat generated when the S-Pen is in use. Surprisingly, one user even tested the taste of the S-Pen, reporting no issues with its flavor profile.

The issue of the smelly S-Pen has gained traction within the Samsung community forums, prompting an official response from Samsung employee “AndrewL.” According to the statement provided, the smell emanating from the S-Pen is a byproduct of its proximity to internal phone components that generate heat during use, leading to the heating of plastic materials and subsequent odor. The analogy drawn is akin to the scent experienced when leaving a car in the sun for an extended period.

Fortunately for users put off by the smell, the solution is simple—avoid sniffing the S-Pen altogether. The odor is not overpowering and can easily go unnoticed unless brought to one’s attention by external sources.
