Seattle Seahawks Make a Splash in NFL Offseason with Sam Howell Acquisition

The Seattle Seahawks have made a significant move in the NFL offseason by acquiring quarterback Sam Howell in a trade with the Washington Commanders, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This trade sees Seattle receiving Howell, a fourth-round pick (No. 102 overall), and a sixth-rounder (No. 179) in exchange for picks in the third (No. 78) and fifth (No. 152) rounds.

Howell, who started for Washington last season, brings added depth to the Seahawks’ quarterback position following Drew Lock’s departure to the New York Giants in free agency. This acquisition also creates potential competition for Geno Smith for the starting quarterback role, as Smith and Howell are currently the only two quarterbacks on Seattle’s roster.

Notably, Howell has two years and $2.085 million remaining on his rookie deal that he signed with Washington as a fifth-round pick in 2022. With limited options for drafting a quarterback due to the lack of a second-round pick this year, the Seahawks aim to strengthen their QB lineup with this trade.

In the previous season, Howell showcased his capabilities by starting all 17 games for Washington, throwing a league-high 612 passes. His performance saw him finishing with the 12th most yards in the NFL, tallying 3,946 yards. Despite his impressive stats, Howell also recorded 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions, alongside being sacked a league-high 65 times.

While Howell faced struggles towards the end of the season with fewer touchdown passes and more interceptions, his potential was evident early on, leading the NFL in passing yards and ranking fifth in touchdowns after 10 games. His impact was solidified in the season finale with a victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

In response to the trade, Washington signed Marcus Mariota in free agency, and with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft, they are anticipated to select a quarterback. This move aligns with their strategy to bolster their roster with a total of six picks in the top 100 and seven in the top 102.

With these developments, the NFL offseason presents an intriguing landscape for both the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, signaling an exciting shift in dynamics for the upcoming season.
