SEC Investigates Boeing’s Safety Claims

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched an investigation into Boeing’s safety statements following an incident where a door plug detached from an Alaska Airlines-operated 737 Max 9 aircraft. This development adds the SEC to the list of agencies scrutinizing Boeing, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

Boeing’s Safety Statements

Boeing’s response to the safety incident included several statements emphasizing their commitment to safety on the dedicated page for updates on the matter:

  • On January 6, Boeing stated, “safety is our top priority” following the incident.
  • On January 15, the company mentioned steps taken to enhance the Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Also on January 15, Boeing expressed willingness to cooperate transparently with regulators and customers.
  • By January 23, Boeing confirmed participation in the NTSB investigation of the Alaska Airlines flight.

Despite the specifics of the SEC’s investigation remaining undisclosed—Boeing and the SEC declined to comment on the matter when approached by Bloomberg—previous regulatory feedback criticized Boeing’s safety and quality assurances. In February, the FAA questioned the strength of Boeing’s safeguards, while in March, the NTSB expressed dissatisfaction with Boeing’s cooperation in providing necessary documents and information.

Boeing’s stock experienced slight fluctuations following the SEC’s announcement, remaining flat in early Friday trading after a brief dip on Thursday post the Bloomberg report. However, the stock has declined over 30% since the beginning of the year.
