SES Acquires Intelsat in Multi-Billion Dollar Deal
SES, a prominent satellite operator based in Luxembourg, has announced plans to purchase Intelsat, a multinational satellite operator headquartered in Virginia, in a deal valued at $3.1 billion. This acquisition is aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the combined entity in the face of SpaceX’s expanding Starlink broadband network.
Enhancing Market Position
The acquisition of Intelsat is expected to bolster SES’s multi-orbit space network, spectrum portfolio, ground infrastructure, go-to-market capabilities, managed service solutions, and financial standing. Adel Al-Saleh, CEO of SES, expressed enthusiasm about the merger, highlighting the opportunity to leverage Intelsat’s expertise, experience, and customer-centric approach to further augment SES’s operations.
Both SES and Intelsat operate communication satellites in geostationary orbit, ensuring global coverage and connectivity. SES also manages the O3b constellation in medium Earth orbit, expanding its reach and capabilities in the satellite communications sector.
Competing with Starlink and Emerging Megaconstellations
With the increasing competition in the satellite industry, particularly from SpaceX’s Starlink constellation comprising over 5,800 active satellites, companies like SES and Intelsat are adapting to the changing landscape. SpaceX’s continuous deployment of Starlink spacecraft poses a significant challenge, prompting traditional operators to explore strategic partnerships and expansions.
Aside from Starlink, other low Earth orbit (LEO) megaconstellations are on the horizon, such as Amazon’s Project Kuiper network, which aims to launch thousands of satellites to provide global internet coverage. The evolving dynamics of the sector necessitate collaborative efforts to navigate disruptions and deliver enhanced services to customers.

David Wajsgras, CEO of Intelsat, emphasized the synergy between SES and Intelsat, emphasizing the combined entity’s strengthened position as a competitive and growth-oriented solutions provider.
