Smoke Engulfs New York City Skyscraper Near One World Trade Center
Thick clouds of smoke engulfed the New York City skyline as a skyscraper close to the One World Trade Center erupted in flames on Wednesday morning. According to Fox 5 New York, officials from the FDNY swiftly responded to the fire at a 72-story skyscraper located on Greenwich Street.
Fire officials present at the scene revealed that the fire originated from the building’s HVAC system situated on the roof of the towering structure. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no injuries have been reported, thanks to the swift response of the firefighters who successfully contained the fire.
Panic Strikes New York Residents
The dense smoke blanketing New York City briefly stirred panic among some residents, evoking memories of the tragic events of 9/11. Videos capturing the smoke billowing near the World Trade Center circulated online, reigniting concerns and fears among onlookers.
Per the latest updates from The New York Post, thick plumes of smoke were observed gushing out of an under-construction skyscraper adjacent to One World Trade Center following the ignition of a fire on the building’s roof earlier in the day.
No injuries were recorded during the blaze at 125 Greenwich St., a residential building still under construction, which prompted the FDNY’s rapid response around 9:20 a.m. Fire officials confirmed that the fire initiated in the HVAC system located on the roof of the 72-story high-rise.
Jerson Valencia, a construction worker at the site, affirmed to The Post that the smoke emanated from the air conditioning duct of the structure.
The impacted skyscraper is a luxury residential development that has been in progress for the past five years, signifying a significant setback due to the fire outbreak.
Investigation Ongoing
As of now, the cause behind the fire remains under investigation, with authorities working diligently to determine the factors that led to the hazardous incident.
