SpaceX’s Starship, a monumental feat of engineering, is poised to revolutionize the viability and affordability of space-based solar power generation. Virtus Solis, a pioneering Michigan-based startup founded by former SpaceX rocket engineer John Bucknell, has unveiled an innovative concept for solar power beaming at the prestigious International Conference on Energy from Space in London.

According to Bucknell, the success of space-based solar power hinges on three critical components: heavy-lift launch capabilities, wireless power transfer technology, and economic feasibility. With the advent of low-cost access to space, fueled by SpaceX’s groundbreaking reusable rockets, the dream of orbiting power plants is inching closer to reality.

Cost-Effective Launch Solutions

In recent years, the cost of launching payloads into space has plummeted as SpaceX leads the charge towards reusable rocket technology. The company’s ambitious Starship project promises to dramatically lower launch costs, potentially reaching as low as $10 per kilogram. This drastic reduction in launch expenses could pave the way for space-based solar power systems to outcompete traditional Earth-based energy sources such as nuclear, gas, and coal-fired power plants.

Bucknell envisions a future where the cost of launching into low Earth orbit falls below $200 per kilogram, enabling space-based solar power to offer electricity at a fraction of the cost of conventional energy production methods. As SpaceX continues to innovate with reusable rocket technology, the feasibility of large-scale solar power arrays orbiting Earth becomes increasingly achievable.

Redefining Energy Economics

While Earth-based photovoltaic panels currently provide the cheapest source of electricity, the intermittent nature of solar power poses a challenge. To address this issue, Virtus Solis plans to deploy massive photovoltaic arrays in orbit, assembled by robotic systems from modular components. These arrays, each spanning up to 0.6 miles in width, would be delivered into orbit by SpaceX’s Starship, a remarkable feat of logistical coordination.

By harnessing the Molniya orbit, a highly elliptical path around Earth, Virtus Solis aims to establish a network of power-generating satellites that can provide constant “baseload power” to regions across the globe. Through the transmission of energy in the form of microwaves to ground-based receiving antennas, this innovative system offers a sustainable solution to meet the world’s growing energy demands.

Futuristic Vision

Virtus Solis is not content with theoretical speculation; the company is actively developing groundbreaking technologies to realize their vision. By enhancing the efficiency of wireless power transmission, Virtus Solis is addressing a key technical hurdle in space-based solar power applications. With an eye towards practical implementation, the company aims to achieve transmission efficiencies of around 20 percent, a significant milestone in the field.

Looking forward, Virtus Solis plans to launch a demonstration power-beaming satellite in 2027, showcasing the in-space assembly of solar panels and the transmission of power back to Earth. This milestone project represents a critical step towards the development of large-scale commercial solar installations, with the goal of deploying a megawatt-class solar array by 2030.
