The company’s spokesperson, Joe Buccino, shared that they have developed a plan that will meet Boeing’s demand rate and quality expectations. While details of the plan have not been disclosed, it is expected to be unveiled during the upcoming earnings presentation.
This development comes at a critical time for Boeing, following a series of setbacks, including a door plug blowout incident on a 737 Max 9 plane operated by Alaska Airlines. This event, along with regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges, has further exacerbated Boeing’s production woes.
The History of Challenges
Spirit AeroSystems, the very supplier now offering a potential solution, was involved in the door plug blowout incident. The company has been utilizing a practice known as “traveled work,” where incomplete fuselages are transported from its facilities in Wichita, Kansas to Boeing’s factories in Washington state to streamline production. However, this method has not been without complications, as evidenced by the missing bolts incident during work on the Alaska Airlines plane.
Speculation has arisen regarding a possible acquisition of Spirit by Boeing, with talks of vertical integration to enhance control over manufacturing processes. Boeing’s CEO, Dave Calhoun, emphasized the importance of the deal, citing the fuselage as a critical component in the production chain.

As negotiations between Boeing and Spirit continue, the focus remains on improving productivity and ensuring seamless collaboration between different facets of the production process. Calhoun stressed the significance of vertical integration as a means to facilitate communication and efficiency.
