Discord Suspends Spy Pet Service

A recent development has transpired in the digital realm that has caught the attention of many, as the service known as Spy Pet, which purported to provide access to an extensive repository of over 3 billion Discord messages and data concerning more than 600 million users, appears to have been deactivated.

According to 404 Media, the entity that initially uncovered Spy Pet’s activities, there are clear indications that Spy Pet has ceased operations, given that its website is currently inaccessible. Responding to inquiries, a Discord representative informed Ars that their safety team had been actively engaged in investigating Spy Pet and had already taken measures to suspend accounts associated with the service.

Violation of Policies

The official spokesperson from Discord conveyed that the act of data scraping and self-botting, which are practices attributed to Spy Pet, constitute serious infringements upon Discord’s Terms of Service and guidelines governing its community. In response to these transgressions, the spokesperson affirmed that the company is contemplating pursuing legal recourse in addition to the account suspensions already implemented.

Furthermore, the Discord spokesperson emphasized that server administrators possess the capability to adjust server permissions to preclude any future surveillance akin to that conducted by Spy Pet on ostensibly public servers.

Contentious Links and Regulatory Concerns

Despite the uncertain fate of Spy Pet post-disciplinary actions by Discord and potential legal repercussions, it is undeniable that the activities facilitated by the platform are at odds with various Internet regulations globally. Particularly, Spy Pet likely contravenes the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) enforced by the European Union, a fact that has been underscored by insights from StackDiary.

The transgressions associated with Spy Pet, particularly in the context of potentially gathering data from accounts belonging to minors for commercial gain, are poised to attract considerable scrutiny and possible legal interventions from regulatory bodies such as the FTC, as highlighted in Article 8 of the GDPR.

Despite attempts to seek clarification from the administrator of Spy Pet via email and Telegram, communication proved futile, with the administrator indicating via Telegram that their primary domain had been suspended and efforts were underway to establish an alternative domain. In their final message, the administrator humorously quipped, “TL;DR: Never trust the Germans.”
