Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Overview

Paramount Plus is set to launch the fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” on April 4, marking the end of a cosmic journey that began with the series’ debut back in 2017. The upcoming season promises an interstellar treasure hunt involving “Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries.”

Return to the Small Screen

When “Discovery” initially premiered in 2017, it marked a significant moment in the revival of the beloved space fantasy universe, taking the franchise back to its television roots where it all began with “Star Trek: The Original Series” in 1966. Now, as the series prepares to bid farewell, viewers will witness Sonequa Martin-Green reprise her role as the valiant Starfleet commander navigating the uncharted territories of outer space in the 32nd century for one last 10-episode mission on Paramount Plus’ flagship “Star Trek” series.

Returning Cast Members

The ensemble cast for the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” includes fan-favorite actors such as Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira), and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Together, they will embark on a thrilling conclusion to the series that has captivated audiences for several seasons.

Reflections on the Journey

In a recent interview with “Star Trek Explorer,” Sonequa Martin-Green shared her thoughts on the expectations and reality of being part of “Star Trek: Discovery” from its inception to the upcoming conclusion. She remarked on the evolution of the show and its place within the broader “Star Trek” universe, highlighting the growth and challenges faced by the cast and crew as they explored new frontiers.

“I had all kinds of expectations of it being this Goliath of an experience because it is a Goliath of a franchise. I was overwhelmed, excited, shocked, and nervous. As we started our journey and started defining ourselves as our iteration of ‘Star Trek’, I started to expect even more from our show, especially by the time we hit Season 3.”

Teasing Season 5

When asked to provide a glimpse of what fans can expect from the final season, Martin-Green hinted at an adventurous storyline reminiscent of an Indiana Jones-style escapade. She emphasized the balance between intensity and enjoyment, offering reassurance that viewers will be taken on a journey filled with excitement and surprises.

“Though what we’re dealing with is big, intense, serious, and impactful, we also try our best to have fun throughout it. There is a sense of leaping forward in Season 5. People will be glad that element and tone are there because it’s a departure from Season 4.”

Revolutionizing Production with AR Technology

One of the technological innovations that significantly impacted the production of the series was the implementation of an Augmented Reality (AR) Wall, a cutting-edge tool that revolutionized set design and visual storytelling. Martin-Green commended the designers and engineers behind the AR Wall for their craftsmanship and highlighted the seamless integration of practical effects, visual effects, and set design to create immersive environments.

“Post is so much of it. It’s such a feat when you add in visual effects, special effects, and practical effects on the day. There were many times where we were perhaps overly ambitious… There are all these sequences in Season 5 where it’s easily 10 different elements going on at the same time.”
