Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Situation
The Pittsburgh Steelers made significant changes to their quarterback group during this offseason, with head coach Mike Tomlin unveiling a detailed plan on how he intends to utilize his new assets.
Starting Quarterback Position
Head coach Tomlin revealed that Russell Wilson is currently in the “pole position” to be the team’s starting quarterback as they head into Week 1 of the upcoming season. Tomlin made this announcement to the press during the annual NFL meetings held in Orlando.
This decision leaves Justin Fields, the former starting quarterback for the Bears, who was recently acquired via trade, in the backup role. Tomlin emphasized the importance of setting clear expectations early on, providing clarity not only for the players but for everyone involved as they prepare for training camp.
Clarity and Transparency
Tomlin emphasized the importance of transparency in setting out the pecking order for the quarterbacks. By defining roles early on, he believes it provides clarity for all parties involved, allowing each player to understand their position and responsibilities within the team.
“We’ve been very transparent about the pecking order, at least to start,” Tomlin explained. “I just think that provides clarity for all parties involved.”
Russell Wilson’s Role
Russell Wilson, a seasoned veteran with a proven track record, signed a one-year $1.2 million deal with the Steelers in free agency following his release from the Denver Broncos. Despite acquiring Wilson, the Steelers seized the opportunity to bring in Justin Fields after the Bears made him available via trade.
In the deal, the Steelers sent a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to acquire Fields. If Fields surpasses expectations and sees more playing time, the pick could potentially become a fourth-rounder. However, for the time being, Fields is expected to begin the next season as a backup.
Opportunity for Competition
While Wilson is slated to start the season as the quarterback, Tomlin did not rule out the possibility of Fields competing for the starting job. Despite being a young talent at just 25 years old, Fields possesses immense potential and talent, a fact that Tomlin acknowledged.
“Rest assured, when it’s time to compete, Justin will be given an opportunity to compete, and we’ll allow those guys to sort themselves out,” said Tomlin. “He oozes talent and potential, and I’m excited about working on extracting it.”
