Pittsburgh Steelers Bolster Linebacking Corps

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant acquisition to bolster their linebacker corps, finding a running mate for outside linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith.

Acquisition of Patrick Queen

Pittsburgh successfully lured inside linebacker Patrick Queen away from the rival Baltimore Ravens. Queen, a second-team All-Pro, has agreed to a lucrative three-year deal worth $41 million. This strategic move highlights the Steelers’ commitment to enhancing their defensive lineup.

Queen, aged 24, is fresh off an outstanding season with Baltimore in 2023, where he amassed 133 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, and an interception. His addition to the Steelers’ roster directly addresses a positional gap left open since Ryan Shazier’s career-ending back injury in December 2017.

The Steelers’ inside linebacking group faced challenges last season due to injuries, with players like Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander forced out early in the campaign. Holcomb is currently recuperating from knee surgery, while Alexander, set to become a free agent, suffered an Achilles tendon injury in a game against Green Bay.

With Queen joining forces with Elandon Roberts, who led the Steelers in tackles last season, Pittsburgh’s defense gains a valuable asset. This signing not only strengthens the team but also alleviates pressure on Holcomb’s return timeline.

Strategic Moves

This key acquisition of Patrick Queen is the Steelers’ second major move since the start of the tampering period. The team also secured nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson on a one-year deal, utilizing cap space cleverly to build a competitive roster.

By securing a dynamic player in Queen, Pittsburgh aims to solidify its linebacker position and enhance defensive capabilities. Queen’s athleticism and versatility as a three-down linebacker align perfectly with the Steelers’ long-term goals.

Over the years, the Steelers have explored various options to fill the void left by Shazier’s absence, including acquiring veterans like Jon Bostic, Mark Barron, Avery Williamson, Joe Schobert, and Myles Jack. However, none have matched Queen’s youth and skill set upon signing.

Queen’s addition to the Steelers’ roster provides a vital inside linebacking presence crucial for facing divisional threats like Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

With Patrick Queen now in the fold, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made a bold statement about their commitment to defensive excellence and long-term success in the NFL.
