Steelers Trade Kenny Pickett to Eagles

Following the official signing of quarterback Russell Wilson with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team made a significant move by trading 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles, as reported by league sources to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

The trade involved the Steelers receiving a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98) and two 2025 seventh-round picks in exchange for Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 120), according to sources close to the situation. This deal is comparable to the one that sent quarterback Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders to the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

With this transaction, Russell Wilson becomes the sole quarterback under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickett, who served as a backup to Mason Rudolph last season, was expected to compete with Wilson for the starting role in training camp. Internally, however, Wilson was already seen as the frontrunner for the position, leading Pickett to seek a fresh start with another franchise.

Having grown up as a Philadelphia Eagles fan in New Jersey, Pickett will now assume the role of backup to Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. During his two-year tenure with the Steelers, following an impressive collegiate career at Pitt, Pickett accumulated a record of 14-10 in 24 starts, completing 62.6% of his pass attempts for 4,474 yards. He threw 13 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions during this time.

Kenny Pickett’s Career with the Steelers

Pickett was drafted to succeed the legendary Ben Roethlisberger, but his time in Pittsburgh was marked by both highs and lows. Despite showcasing his ability with several fourth-quarter comebacks, Pickett struggled with injuries and inconsistent offensive performance throughout his stint with the team.

After an impressive finish to his rookie season and a strong preseason showing, Pickett faced challenges in his second year under offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Early in the 2023 season, Pickett faced difficulties as the offense failed to generate momentum, leading to his eventual benching. An ankle injury requiring TightRope surgery further sidelined him for the latter part of the season.

Ultimately, the trade of Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles signals a new chapter for the talented quarterback, offering him the opportunity to contribute to a new team and pursue success in a fresh environment.
