Impact of Critical Social Justice Attitudes on Mental Well-being
A recent study conducted in Finland has shed light on the psychological implications of embracing “woke” ideologies related to social justice. The research, titled “Construction and validation of a scale for assessing critical social justice attitudes,” was undertaken by Oskari Lahtinen, a senior researcher at the University of Turku’s INVEST Research Flagship Centre. The primary objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence of the “woke” worldview and the demographic characteristics of individuals who endorse it.
PsyPost, a respected publication focusing on psychological advancements, highlighted some key findings of the study. One intriguing aspect explored was the association between critical social justice beliefs and mental well-being. Lahtinen noted a connection between a higher level of agreement with critical social justice attitudes and an increased likelihood of experiencing anxiety, melancholy, and depression. Notably, the statement “If white people have on average a higher income than black people, it is because of racism” displayed the most robust positive correlation with anxiety and depression, while also exhibiting a significant negative correlation with happiness.
These findings, though somewhat amusing, underscore a potential relationship between subscribing to liberal ideologies and experiencing adverse mental health outcomes. The notion that liberalism may manifest as a form of mental illness is a notion worth contemplating in light of this research.
