Analysis of 2024’s Summer Movie Season

2024’s summer movie season commenced with the release of The Fall Guy and a re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Despite the anticipation surrounding these throwback films, the box office numbers are not as significant as one might have expected.

The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, garnered $65.4 million globally, with $28.5 million from North America. Although it fell slightly short of the initial domestic projections, the film has received positive reviews, and positive word of mouth could potentially bolster its revenue in the long run. On the other hand, The Phantom Menace raked in $8.1 million in North America and $14.5 million worldwide. The nostalgia factor and the inclusion of a preview for the upcoming The Acolyte series for Disney+ played a role in boosting the film’s performance.

Comparatively, The Fall Guy’s opening weekend numbers experienced a substantial decline from previous years. In 2023 and 2022, Marvel set the bar high with films such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which opened to $118.4 million, and Doctor Strange 2, which earned $187.4 million. The absence of a Marvel blockbuster this May resulted in a 53% drop from 2022 and a 66% drop from 2023, marking the weakest start for summer movies in approximately 15 years.

Upcoming Releases and Box Office Prospects

Looking ahead, the lineup for the remainder of May promises a string of blockbusters. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to generate considerable buzz upon its release, followed by The Strangers: Chapter One and If on May 17. The much-anticipated Furiosa will conclude the month on a high note leading into Memorial Day weekend. June 7 will see the release of three major films, including Bad Boys: Ride or Die, The Watchers, and The Exorcism, featuring renowned actors like Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and Russell Crowe.
