Sequel Announcement: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Continues

Nintendo and Illumination have officially announced their collaboration once again to produce a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026, in the United States and around the globe.

The decision to create a sequel comes as no surprise, given the tremendous success of the 2023 movie. The initial installment broke records for a game adaptation, grossing a remarkable $1.36 billion at the box office worldwide. Additionally, Nintendo reported a considerable boost in game sales and a vast global audience of over 168 million. A true cause for celebration on Mario Day!

The upcoming movie will be helmed by directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Matthew Fogel taking charge of the screenplay. A key contributing factor to the previous film’s triumph was the active involvement of Nintendo’s game creators in the production process. The sequel will once again see Universal Pictures and Nintendo co-financing the project, with Universal handling global theatrical distribution.

The producers of this highly-anticipated sequel will be Illumination’s founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, alongside Nintendo’s representative director and fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto. This duo will undoubtedly bring their wealth of experience and creativity to ensure a successful continuation of the franchise.

Renewed Partnership: A Bright Future Ahead

Illumination, known for hit films like Despicable Me, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, and The Secret Life of Pets, is delighted to extend its collaboration with Nintendo. The production company expressed its excitement in continuing to bring joy and discovery to audiences of all ages worldwide, allowing fans to immerse themselves in the beloved characters and stories from one of the most iconic game franchises.
