Switch 2 Joy-Con Attachment Mechanism

An exclusive report from Spanish-language gaming news site Vandal has hinted at a potential shift in the design of the upcoming Switch 2 console. According to the report, the traditional slide-in “click” mechanism for the Switch Joy-Cons may be replaced with a magnetic attachment system. This rumored change could have implications for backward compatibility with existing Switch Joy-Cons.

The report suggests that the new magnetic attachment system may pose challenges for using current Switch Joy-Cons directly with the Switch 2. However, there is speculation that an optional magnetic shim could be introduced to allow older Joy-Cons to connect to the new console’s magnetic points. On the other hand, Switch Pro Controllers, which do not physically attach to the Switch, are expected to be fully compatible with the Switch 2.

Unnamed sources cited by Vandal, including accessory and peripheral manufacturers, claim to have had hands-on experience with the new console. The Switch 2 was apparently concealed in an opaque box to conceal its design while providing some details on its size. The sources indicate that the Switch 2 will be larger than the original Switch but not as big as the Steam Deck.

Controller Compatibility Concerns

Nintendo’s track record with controller compatibility across console generations has been mixed. While the company ensured GameCube controllers were usable on the Wii (and to some extent, the Wii U), the Switch introduced limited-edition retro controllers for certain classic Nintendo Switch Online games. Microsoft, on the other hand, emphasizes that Xbox Series S/X consoles are compatible with all standard Xbox One controllers, with Kinect being the exception. PS4 owners needed to purchase new DualSense controllers to use on the PS5.

Questions remain regarding whether the Switch 2 will support the vast library of games designed for the current Switch generation. Reports indicate that developers are already testing backward compatibility for existing titles on Nintendo’s upcoming hardware. Earlier reports suggest that the Switch 2 might launch in early 2025, allowing developers ample time to prepare a robust software lineup for the new console. Speculations about the Switch 2 include a larger 8-inch screen and potential support for DLSS upscaling on Nvidia Ampere-based processors.
