Marvel’s Ultimate Universe: The Return of The Ultimates
Marvel’s Ultimate Universe has always featured a team of Avengers, and the newly reimagined iteration is no exception. The team is making a comeback with The Ultimates, set to be the first authentic team book of the revamped Ultimate line. Penned by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Juan Frigeri, the new series delves into Tony Stark’s mission of assembling both established superheroes and those navigating their journey to heroism. Among the recruits are Doom, Sif, and Captain America, united under Stark’s leadership.
A Fresh Approach to the Classic Team
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Deniz Camp shed light on his vision for The Ultimates and how it builds upon the foundation laid by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s earlier rendition. Instead of tackling intergalactic threats and global conflicts, the team finds themselves as fugitives falsely accused of mass murders within the Ultimate Universe and Ultimate Invasion backdrop. Camp draws a parallel to WWII Partisans, describing them as “a resistance network in occupied territory constantly under threat due to their outlawed status.”
Expanding the Roster and Stakes
Stark’s ambitious plan to construct a superhero resistance network drives the narrative, with each installment introducing an Ultimate Universe adaptation of a Marvel hero. While the debut issue focuses on Ant-Man and the Wasp, Camp remains tight-lipped about the rest of the roster. The team faces an 18-month deadline to recruit members and combat the looming threat posed by the Maker and his Council within their personal City. Adding layers to the challenge is Tony Stark’s internal conflict, torn between the ideologies of Doom and Captain America. The burgeoning team dynamics and diverse backgrounds promise conflict and growth as the series unfolds.
Camp emphasizes the thematic departure from the primary Marvel universe, highlighting its focus on transformation and global impact. The Ultimates aims to carve its distinct identity within the Marvel universe, offering Camp creative freedom akin to crafting a creator-owned project while honoring classic Marvel themes and characters. The responsibility of contributing to Marvel’s legacy fuels Camp’s dedication to delivering a series that resonates with fans.
