Rediscovering Dorm Life Through a Celestial Spectacle

Revisiting the days of dorm life may seem like a distant memory for many, but for some, a celestial event can serve as the perfect opportunity to relive those college days. This is the experience that unfolded in Knowles Hall North at the State University of New York Potsdam during the 2024 total solar eclipse on April 8. Dormant for the most part, these dorm rooms became a makeshift accommodation option for eager spectators seeking a front-row seat to nature’s grand spectacle.

A Unique Experience

For a mere $60 a night, individuals like myself and my teenage daughter Zadie found ourselves embarking on this peculiar journey of sleeping bags, communal bathrooms, and shared spaces. The allure of witnessing the moon’s dance with the sun during totality was enough to entice us into swapping the comforts of a plush hotel for the authenticity of a college living experience. The nostalgia of wandering the hallways, navigating shared facilities, and engaging with fellow eclipse enthusiasts added a distinct charm to the entire affair.

Reconnecting with College Days

For alumni such as Colleen Parriott, SUNY Potsdam Class of ’82, the invitation to return to the dorms where she once resided sparked a sense of excitement and nostalgia. The prospect of delving into eclipse-themed activities and educational sessions created an enticing atmosphere that beckoned not just the curious but the inner “nerds” within us.

Knowles Hall North, serving as the backdrop for this celestial reunion, evoked memories from Parriott’s undergraduate days, offering a juxtaposition of familiarity and subtle changes. The echoes of past footsteps resonated within the walls, bridging the gap between yesteryears and the present moment.

A Glimpse into Dorm Life

For many visitors, including myself, the opportunity to immerse oneself in dorm life and witness the eclipse from a university setting presented a unique blend of adventure and educational enrichment. The communal spaces, the basic amenities, and the shared camaraderie among eclipse enthusiasts added layers of depth to an already monumental astronomical event.

As we prepared to embark on a guided tour of the SUNY Potsdam campus, the anticipation of exploring the Anthropology Department’s “eclipse-themed cooking” session hung in the air, promising a fusion of academic curiosity and gastronomic delight.

A Generational Perspective

For teenagers like Zadie and Catalina, the eclipse experience not only offered a glimpse into college life but also ignited a sense of anticipation and excitement for the future. Their fresh perspectives, unburdened by nostalgia, captured the essence of dorm living through a lens of novelty and curiosity.

As we bid farewell to our dorm rooms and the shared spaces that fostered new friendships and rekindled old memories, the 2024 total solar eclipse at SUNY Potsdam served as a catalyst for reimagining the past and embracing the present with a sense of wonder and camaraderie.
