Recovery Efforts of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently completed a comprehensive survey of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore using advanced sonar imaging technology. Analysis of the gathered data has indicated that the debris obstructing the shipping channel can be efficiently removed, allowing for the prompt reopening of the vital waterway by May.
The extensive sonar images, publicly released earlier this week, revealed that a significant portion of the bridge’s substructure remains intact beneath the water’s surface. Despite the collapse, the fundamental framework of the bridge is still present, necessitating meticulous efforts for the removal of the wreckage and the subsequent dredging operations in the Patapsco River.
Restoration Plans and Timeline
The collapsed metal trusses spanning the river between the bridge supports, impeding vessel passage, are scheduled for extraction by the end of the month. Once these obstacles are efficiently removed, a newly developed 280-foot-wide channel will be established, facilitating unhindered navigation for larger vessels to access the Port of Baltimore.

“We now have two alternative channels that are open. We have a third channel that’ll be open this month that will deal with the majority of traffic into the port of Baltimore. And by the end of May we hope to have the entire channel reopened,” Sen. Ben Cardin shared.

The catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, resulting from a collision with the cargo ship Dali on March 26, has severely impeded Maryland’s largest port operations, inflicting substantial economic repercussions on the local community. In response to this crisis, Senator Cardin is actively advocating for the introduction of a legislation package aimed at securing federal funding to cover the entirety of the reconstruction expenses.
