Ubisoft Ventures into Cinematic Territory with Watch Dogs Movie

Almost a decade ago, Ubisoft delved into the movie industry by bringing its Assassin’s Creed franchise to the big screen. However, this endeavor did not yield the expected success. Following this, the French publisher shifted its focus to television, with the release of the notable Werewolves Within. Now, Ubisoft is aiming to make a mark in the cinematic world once again, this time with the Watch Dogs series.

New Feature Film in Development

According to Deadline, a feature film based on the Watch Dogs franchise is currently in the works under New Regency. The movie has already secured Sophie Wilde as a potential lead, known for her role in the horror film, Talk to Me by A24. Plot details are being tightly kept under wraps, but the script will be crafted by Christie Leblanc (known for Oxygen), with direction by Mathieu Turi, acclaimed for The Dark Deep. Turi has also been selected to direct a film adaptation of Asobo’s A Plague Tale: Innocence.

The Watch Dogs Franchise

The Watch Dogs games are tech-driven thrillers set in modern day scenarios, revolving around the premise of hackers using their phones or computers to manipulate the computing network of the cities they inhabit. The initial installment of the franchise garnered attention with its gameplay debut at E3 in 2012, hinting at an innovative future for open-world gaming. Although the subsequent titles, including the 2014 release, have a loyal fan base, they did not entirely fulfill the promises showcased in the initial demo.

Subsequent entries such as Watch Dogs 2 in 2016 shifted the narrative to San Francisco from Chicago, introducing a new array of characters and a more upbeat tone that resonated positively with audiences. The 2020 release, Watch Dogs Legion, allowed players to embody various characters in London, forming a resistance group against the oppressive regime of the city. Since the launch of Watch Dogs Legion, there has been silence on any new additions to the franchise, leaving fans uncertain about Ubisoft’s future plans regarding the series.

While the recent show, Captain Laserhawk, featured characters from the Watch Dogs series as part of a shared Ubisoft universe, the official canon status of this remains ambiguous. Any potential synergy between the upcoming movie and the game series may only be discussed closer to the movie’s completion and impending release. Whether this collaboration involves a modern remake of the original Watch Dogs or other forms of multimedia ventures, Ubisoft’s intentions remain undisclosed until the film nears its premiere.
