Unity Appoints Matthew Bromberg as New CEO, President, and Board Member

Unity, a prominent game engine maker, has recently named Matthew Bromberg as the company’s new CEO, president, and board member. Following the interim leadership of former Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, Bromberg is set to officially assume his role as CEO on May 15. In the meantime, Whitehurst will transition to the position of executive chair of the Unity board, and Roelof Botha will shift from chairman to the lead independent board member.

Significance of the Appointment

Bromberg’s appointment fills the vacancy left by John Riccitiello, who stepped down after a pricing controversy that caused unrest among game developers using Unity. However, Unity managed to alleviate the situation by readjusting its pricing structure. The company is currently in a critical phase, preparing to launch Unity 6, the latest upgrade of its game engine, in direct competition with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.4.

Rolf Botha, expressing confidence in the decision to appoint Bromberg, remarked, “We couldn’t be happier to welcome Matt Bromberg as Unity’s new CEO. The Board and the entire leadership team are confident that Matt’s proven leadership, customer-first mindset, and deep understanding of the dynamic gaming industry make him the right executive to lead Unity forward.” Meanwhile, Jim Whitehurst also conveyed his appreciation for leading Unity during the transition period and highlighted his commitment to supporting Matt Bromberg in driving creator success and innovation within the company.

Experience and Expertise

Matt Bromberg brings with him over two decades of experience in the gaming industry, having previously served as the Chief Operating Officer at Zynga, a major mobile game developer and publisher. During his tenure at Zynga, Bromberg played a pivotal role in the company’s revival and growth, overseeing global game studios, product development, technology, as well as data and analytics. He also held several leadership positions at Electronic Arts, where he spearheaded the company’s mobile division expansion and led international teams working on popular games across different genres.

Bromberg expressed his excitement about joining Unity, stating, “I am thrilled to join Unity as it embraces its next chapter. I look forward to working with Jim, the Board, and the incredible people of Unity to provide the best integrated platform for creators to bring great games and experiences to their audiences globally while also helping accelerate the Company’s revenue growth and profitability.”

Financial Outlook and Additional Roles

Unity is expected to announce its first-quarter 2024 financial results on May 9, 2024. In addition to his role at Unity, Matthew Bromberg currently serves as a senior advisor at Blackstone and sits on the boards of directors of Bumble, Monzo, and Blast. He previously served on the board of Fitbit and held various leadership positions at Electronic Arts, contributing significantly to the company’s mobile division and BioWare studios globally. Bromberg’s extensive background includes spearheading the esports revolution as the President and CEO of Major League Gaming.

Matthew Bromberg earned a B.A. in English from Cornell University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School, rounding out his diverse skill set and expertise in the gaming and technology sectors.
