Freaky Friday Sequel Announcement

The beloved 2003 version of Freaky Friday, a standout early-aughts live-action teen movie from Disney, is set to receive a long-awaited sequel. After years of speculation, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have officially confirmed the return of Freaky Friday 2 in a recent Instagram post.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hulu has enlisted Nisha Ganatra, the filmmaker behind Welcome to Chippendales, to direct the sequel. Producer Andrew Gunn, along with former Disney executive Kristen Burr, will also be returning to oversee the project.

Franchise Legacy

Since its original release in 1976, Freaky Friday has been a recurring franchise at Disney. The story revolves around a teen daughter and her mother who magically swap bodies, leading to humorous and heartwarming situations. Based on Mary Rodgers’ novel of the same name, the concept has inspired various adaptations, including a musical.

Notably, the new script for Freaky Friday 2, penned by Jordan Weiss, promises to take a multigenerational approach to the storyline. Lindsay Lohan, known for her role in the 2003 remake, has since transitioned from teenage stardom, adding a fresh dynamic to the upcoming sequel.

Production Details

The filming for Freaky Friday 2 is scheduled to commence this summer, although Disney has not yet disclosed whether the film will have a theatrical release or premiere directly on Disney+. Fans eagerly anticipate the continuation of this beloved franchise as the story of body-swapping and familial bonds unfolds once more.
