West Virginia Hires Darian DeVries as Men’s Basketball Coach

West Virginia announced on Sunday that they have appointed Darian DeVries, formerly of Drake, as their new men’s basketball coach. The agreement includes a five-year contract for DeVries, who has established himself as one of the top mid-major coaches in the country in recent years.

DeVries led Drake to the NCAA tournament three times in the last four seasons, consistently achieving at least 25 wins per season. With a remarkable record of 150-55 over six years at Drake, his success speaks for itself.

In a statement, DeVries expressed his excitement about leading such a historic program with a strong fanbase. He acknowledged the great tradition of Mountaineer Basketball and the incredible support it receives nationally. DeVries aims to continue building on the success of the program moving forward.

The vacancy at West Virginia was left by Bob Huggins after his departure amid controversy following a DUI arrest. Assistant coach Josh Eilert temporarily took charge for the 2023-24 season before the school conducted a thorough search for a permanent replacement.

DeVries brings with him a wealth of experience, having spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Creighton and 20 seasons in total on the Bluejays’ staff. This background, working under coaches like Dana Altman and Greg McDermott, has equipped DeVries well for his new role.

West Virginia had a challenging season prior to DeVries’ arrival, finishing with a 9-23 record and a 4-14 conference mark at the bottom of the Big 12. However, the Mountaineers have a strong history of NCAA tournament appearances, including a Final Four run in 2010.

Accepting the coaching position comes with high expectations for DeVries in a competitive Big 12 conference known for its strong basketball programs. Wren Baker, West Virginia’s athletic director, commended DeVries’ coaching abilities and personal qualities, highlighting his leadership, integrity, and player development skills.

Sources have revealed that Tucker DeVries, Darian’s son and a talented player in his own right, is expected to join the West Virginia program. Tucker, a standout guard at Drake, was named the MVC player of the year in 2023 and 2024, with an impressive collegiate career thus far.

Drake’s recent performances in the NCAA tournament under DeVries have showcased the team’s potential, winning games and challenging strong opponents. His son’s prospective arrival at West Virginia adds another dimension to the program, bringing talent and familiarity to the Mountaineers’ roster.
