Wyoming Governor Signs Bill Banning Gender Transition Procedures for Minors
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon recently signed Senate File 99, a bill that prohibits doctors from performing “gender transition” and sex change procedures on minors. According to the new legislation, healthcare professionals who offer minors puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or sex reassignment surgeries may face suspension or revocation of their licenses.
Although Governor Gordon signed the bill, he did not express wholehearted enthusiasm about it. In a released statement, he mentioned, “I signed SF99 because I support the protections this bill includes for children, however it is my belief that the government is straying into the personal affairs of families.”
Gordon further elaborated, stating, “Our legislature needs to sort out its intentions with regard to parental rights. While it inserts governmental prerogative in some places, it affirms parental rights in others.”
Opposition to the Ban
The American Civil Liberties Union of Wyoming has voiced opposition to the new law. ACLU’s Executive Director, Libby Skarin, expressed concern, stating, “By signing this bill into law, Gov. Gordon has put the government in charge of making vital decisions traditionally reserved for parents in Wyoming.” Skarin emphasized that the ban would not prevent Wyoming residents from identifying as transgender but would deprive struggling transgender youth of essential support needed for their development into successful transgender adults.
The legislation is set to take effect on July 1, impacting the medical treatment options available to transgender minors in the state of Wyoming.
