The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Catholic Community

Artificial intelligence made waves within the Catholic community when Catholic Answers, a San Diego-based publisher of church resources, unveiled “Father Justin,” an AI chatbot, earlier this week. Despite its defrocking by the end of the week, the chatbot will continue to operate simply as “Justin.”

Catholic Answers clarified that “Father Justin” was developed to respond to inquiries about the Catholic Faith for educational and entertainment purposes only. The organization stressed that the AI chatbot was essentially a sophisticated search engine and not a substitute for genuine human interaction. The website carried a disclaimer urging individuals to seek advice from their pastor or spiritual advisor for personal issues.

Reactions to “Father Justin”

However, the launch of the AI chatbot received mixed reviews. Some users expressed disappointment with certain answers provided by Father Justin. One user, U.S. Army Chaplain Father Mike Palmer, criticized the representation of the AI as a priest, suggesting that it was unnecessary and could lead to confusion and ridicule.

Several examples surfaced of the chatbot’s unusual responses to users’ queries. For instance, Father Justin allegedly suggested using Gatorade instead of holy water in a baptism and offered advice on how a brother and sister could prepare for marriage to each other. Moreover, the chatbot purportedly granted absolution to a user after hearing her confession.

Concerns from Christian Scholars

Christian scholars also voiced concerns regarding the chatbot’s limited understanding of the Pope’s authority within the Catholic Church. Author and composer Peter Kwasniewski emphasized that theological questions should not be directed to a computer and questioned the appropriateness of seeking spiritual guidance from an AI.

In response to the criticisms, Catholic Answers COO Jon Sorensen defended the project’s intent to explore the potential of AI in their work, highlighting the learning opportunities gained from the initiative.

Decision to Remove “Father Justin”

Despite initial enthusiasm, Catholic Answers decided to revoke Father Justin’s virtual priesthood after a short period of operation. President Christopher Check acknowledged the feedback received about the representation of an AI character as a priest and promptly rebranded the chatbot as “Justin.”

Check reassured users that the AI chatbot would still be available on the Catholic Answers website, albeit in a non-clerical capacity. The organization aims to introduce a new “lay” character for their app in the near future.

Pope Francis’s Stance on Artificial Intelligence

Notably, Pope Francis has expressed concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on society. He emphasized the need for ethical development of AI to benefit humanity and promote peace. In an address prior to World Peace Day, the Pope warned of AI’s growing influence on various aspects of human life.

Moreover, the Italian government confirmed that Pope Francis would address the G7 summit in Italy in June on the subject of artificial intelligence. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni anticipated the Pope’s insights to contribute significantly to establishing a regulatory and ethical framework for AI development, quoting a speech from Pope John Paul II in 1979 to underscore the importance of human-centric governance in political activities.
