Ocasio-Cortez Accuses Israel of Committing “Genocide” Against Palestinians in Gaza

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure on the far-left, has made a bold statement accusing Israel of perpetrating a “genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza. In a recent speech on the House floor, the New York representative condemned the Biden administration, suggesting complicity in what she described as “mass killing.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s impassioned plea included a chilling depiction of the alleged atrocities, stating, “If you want to know what an unfolding genocide looks like, open your eyes. It looks like the forced famine of 1.1 million innocents. It looks like thousands of children eating grass as their bodies consume themselves, while trucks of food are slowed and halted just miles away.”

She went on to emphasize the need for action, asserting, “[We] must fulfill our obligations to the American people to suspend the transfer of US weapons to the Israeli government in order to stop and prevent further atrocities.” Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that honoring alliances should not entail facilitating what she perceives as mass killing.

Ongoing Evolution of Ocasio-Cortez’s Stance

While Ocasio-Cortez had previously refrained from explicitly using the term “genocide” to describe the situation in Gaza, she appears to have shifted her approach. In a recent interview with NBC, she acknowledged the gravity of the events, stating, “The fact that this word is even in play, the fact that this word is even in our discourse, I think, demonstrates the mass inhumanity that Gazans are facing.”

She further expressed a sense of responsibility, saying, “I think what we are seeing here is that the Netanyahu government has lost public support and that we have a responsibility to protect the human rights and the humanity of Gazans and hostages alike in the area.”

Increasing Pressure and Confrontations

Ocasio-Cortez has faced mounting pressure from her supporters to intensify her critique of Israel’s actions against Hamas. This pressure reached a boiling point earlier this month when a group of anti-Israel activists approached her at a movie theater in Brooklyn, accompanied by her fiancé Riley Roberts. The encounter reportedly led to a heated exchange, showcasing the tensions surrounding the issue.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has maintained a cautious stance, offering tepid support to Israel. Despite efforts to dissuade Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from launching an invasion of Rafah, Biden’s interventions have fallen short. Netanyahu’s decision to proceed with the invasion was described by Biden as crossing a “red line.”
