Apple Announces Delay in Release of Redesigned iPads

Apple enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the release of the new iPad models will need to exercise some patience as Apple plans to launch the redesigned iPad Pros and refreshed iPad Air models sometime in “early May,” as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This delay can be attributed to “complex new manufacturing techniques” for the new iPad screens, as well as the finalization of software for the devices.

Redesigned iPad Pros and Refreshed iPad Air Models

The new iPad Pro models are set to feature OLED display panels for the first time, along with design tweaks not seen since the 2018 iPad Pros. These changes will introduce a more modern look as the iPads shift away from the current rounded, slim-bezeled design. Alongside these updates, redesigned Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories are expected to accompany the new tablets.

On the other hand, the iPad Air refresh is expected to maintain its current design, reminiscent of the 2018-era iPad Pro refresh. This iteration will feature a power button-mounted TouchID fingerprint sensor instead of the FaceID camera for authentication. The new Air models will boast the M2 chip, distinct from the current M1, and a 12.9-inch variant will provide a more affordable large-screen option for users seeking an iPad as their primary computer.

Pricing Rumors and Future Speculations

While rumors speculate a potential price increase for the iPad Pro compared to the current-generation model, details regarding this remain conflicting. Gurman’s reports have not elaborated on Apple’s pricing strategy for these new devices.

Regarding Apple’s broader tablet lineup, little information has been disclosed about the fate of older tablets like the sixth-generation iPad mini, the ninth-generation $329 iPad, and the 10th-generation iPad from October 2022. Despite new hardware releases, questions loom regarding the utilization of Apple’s powerful M-series chips within the iPad ecosystem, given the current limitations posed by the iPad’s multitasking capabilities and app store offerings.

Future Outlook and Speculations

With Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference approaching, slated for June 10, hopes are high for updates to iPadOS that may fully leverage the capabilities of Apple’s newest chipsets. While users anticipate the launch of the redesigned iPads, Apple’s strategic decisions regarding pricing, software features, and hardware improvements will undoubtedly shape the landscape of the tablet market moving forward.
