Apple to Debut New Immersive Video Content for Vision Pro Headset

Tonight, a highly-anticipated event will take place as Apple unveils new Immersive Video content for the Vision Pro headset, marking the introduction of the first sports content designed for this innovative device. Despite the excitement surrounding this new release, the absence of fresh content in the last couple of months puts this announcement into perspective.

Commencing at 6 pm PT/9 pm ET, Vision Pro users will have the opportunity to indulge in a sports film tailored specifically for the Immersive Video format within the platform. The content will consist of a series of highlights from the Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs of the previous year, expected to run for approximately five minutes. Notably, this viewing experience will be offered at no cost to all Vision Pro users.

Current State of Immersive Video Content

Back on February 2, Apple unveiled initial episodes of three distinct Immersive Video series including Adventure, Prehistoric Planet, and Wildlife, coinciding with the launch of the Vision Pro headset. Each series premiered with one episode labeled as “Episode 1” of “Season 1”. However, nearly two months have passed without any follow-up episodes being released. The sole additional Immersive Video content available to users to date is a performance video featuring Alicia Keyes, also launched on February 2, each video lasting only a few minutes.

Hence, the forthcoming soccer video offering glimpses into the thrilling sports moments of 2023 signifies the sole new addition to Apple’s Immersive Video content library since the device’s introduction at the beginning of February.

Challenges and Future Possibilities

A review of the Vision Pro as an entertainment accessory highlighted its remarkable performance when viewing 2D films and videos, complemented by the promising 3D video capabilities it possesses. The anticipation for future episodes was high, fueled by expectations of a weekly release schedule akin to traditional Apple TV+ series. Nevertheless, the absence of further installments remains a point of concern.

Apple’s choice to omit a first-party app for playing 3D videos downloaded from the web led to the creation of third-party solutions like the Reality Player app. The visionOS App Store offers a limited selection of 3D video streaming and downloading services, lacking the variety available on other headset platforms.

Despite refraining from categorizing the Vision Pro as a VR headset, Apple’s pivot towards “spatial computing” underscores its versatility compared to conventional VR devices. However, the deficiency in new passive viewing content trails the offerings of rival products after two months of availability.

While the Vision Pro excels in displaying a wide array of 2D video content, it reinforces the belief that the device primarily caters to flat, 2D content displayed within a 3D spatial environment. Nevertheless, recent updates in spatial apps and games suggest some progress in this aspect.

Even though the ability to position 2D viewports freely within the virtual space offers a unique experience, the absence of significant investment in developing genuine 3D content raises questions. As users anticipate new releases, the impending debut of the soccer video serves as the only fresh offering available at present.
